GUATEMALA CITY – Fire rescue personnel found the charred bodies of two brothers alongside a little-traveled road in Amatitlan, 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of this capital, Guatemalan authorities said Thursday.The bodies were apparently burned at the scene, a spokesman for fire rescue told reporters.
Relatives identified the victims as brothers Gustavo and Alex Hernandez Paiz, ages 25 and 22, respectively.
The men were last seen Wednesday afternoon as they left their home in Amatitlan, a police spokesman said. Unconfirmed media accounts described the brothers as criminals who preyed on their neighbors.
Guatemala is considered one of the most violent countries in Latin America.
A total of 4,132 murders were registered in the Central American country between January and August, up 5.84 percent from the 3,904 killings registered during the same period last year, the National Forensic Sciences Institute said. EFE
