China ( Woman Survives 15 Days Trapped in Well in China )

BEIJING – A woman survived for 15 days after being trapped in an abandoned well in the central province of Henan, Chinese authorities reported Tuesday.

Su Qixiu, 38, was found in the well in the town of Zhongfeng about 4 p.m. on Monday after being stuck there for two weeks.

The well, about a meter (yard) in diameter and four meters (about 13 feet) deep, was hidden in a cornfield and its walls are too slippery to climb up.

The woman was found by a team of firefighters who were scouring the area after she disappeared 15 days ago “face up and surprisingly thin, but with her eyes very much open,” said Chen Kui, one of the rescuers.

Chen said that, when Su was found she could not move or speak, but suddenly she extended her hands. She did not have any serious injuries, but she still has not been able to eat any solid food or say anything, although she is in stable condition and is ingesting liquids.

The woman survived thanks to the raw corn she was carrying when she fell into the well, as well as the rains that provided her with enough water, her husband said.

She went missing Sept. 1 when she went to harvest some corn in the field. EFE
